Titre/Title : Utilization of SLAs for Achievement of Energy Efficient Clouds

Résumé/Abstract

Cloud computing is a promising technology for the realization of large, scalable, and on-demand provisioned computing infrastructures. Currently, many enterprises are adopting this technology to achieve high performance and scalability for their applications while maintaining low costs. Service provisioning in the Cloud is based on a set of predefined non-functional properties specified and negotiated by means of Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Cloud workloads are dynamic and change constantly. Thus, in order to reduce steady human interactions, self-manageable Cloud techniques are required to comply with the agreed customers’ SLAs. In this talk we discuss flexible and reliable management of SLAs, which is of paramount importance for both, Cloud providers and consumers. On the one hand, the prevention of SLA violations avoids penalties that are costly to providers. On the other hand, based on flexible and timely reactions to possible SLA violation threats, user interaction with the system can be minimized enabling Cloud computing to take roots as a flexible and reliable form of on-demand computing. Furthermore, a trade-off has to be found between proactive actions that prevent SLA violations and those that reduce energy consumption, i.e., increase energy efficiency.

Titre/Title : Service Level Agreement for Cloud Computing: Towards a Control – Theoretic Approach

Résumé/Abstract

Ad-hoc configuration of cloud services poses significant challenges to the performance, availability and economical costs of clouds. In this talk, we examine the impact of cloud service configuration on the central tradeoff between service performance and dependability. We present a control-theoretic approach for modeling, capacity planning and online control for full elastic cloud. We illustrate the approach through two case studies with industry-standard benchmarks. Our experiments show that the proposed techniques sucessfully guarantee SLA constraints.

Titre/Title : BtrPlace: An extensible VM manager to face up to SLA expectations in a cloud

Résumé/Abstract

Clients of IaaS providers are looking for dependable infrastructures that can cope with their SLA requirements. To stay attractive, a cloud must then rely on a VM placement algorithm with features matching as possible the SLAs expectations. These constraints are however very specific to each of the tenants but also the infrastructure. They also cover a large range of concerns (reliability, performance, security, energy-efficiency, …) that are continuously evolving according to new trends and new technologies. Current VM placement algorithms are designed as monolithic systems. Clouds administrators and clients are then passive actors, waiting for the future release of the placement algorithm that may match their current expectations.

During this presentation, I will present BtrPlace, the extensible VM placement algorithm that is used inside the open source project Entropy.

BtrPlace can be specialized on demand by third party developers to integrate new placement constraints. It has already been used successfully to address high-availability, security but also energy-efficiency concerns. It has been developped since 2006 in the Mines de Nantes then with the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis.

Titre/Title : EASI-CLOUDS

Résumé/Abstract

EASI-CLOUDS is an ongoing ITEA project with 30 partners in 6 different countries. Its main goal is to deliver technology for the management of heterogeneous providers of IaaS/PaaS/SaaS in different types of deployment: hybrid, brokerage and federation. It will build on top of OCCI and CompatibleOne results. This presentation will describe the architecture and focus on how it enables the management of SLA of applications.

Titre/TitleCloudStack IaaS solution and SLA

Résumé/Abstract

CloudStack is a IaaS solution to build public and private Clouds, it is hypervisor agnostic, open source, currently in incubation at the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). Current development from the community includes better support for cloud standards such as OCCI and CIMI. SLAs are a new area of development for CloudStack and this talk will discuss potential areas of collaboration to tie CloudStack to cloud brokers that will enforce SLAs between Cloud consumers and providers.
